I have been so inspired by finding free patterns on other peoples' blogs that I decided to offer one of my own. I wrote these instructions for a class I taught on Cathedral Window Quilting (after learning how to do it from my industrious friend Brite, who has actually finished a cathedral window quilt, unlike moi). This is a variation of a traditional Cathedral Window pattern, easier because you quilt the squares individually then piece them together.
I've been hampered by technology, though, and I can't figure out how to merge the two .pdf pages into one. I also can't figure out how to add a nice "download" button to my sidebar, so it looks as if I'll have to post the images themselves, and you can feel free to download them by right-clicking and selecting "Save image as."

Thanks for that tutorial! I have always wanted to make one of these, and the more I see them finished, the more inspired I am to do it!
I have never hand pieced anything, but I have a few books with updated methods, and have yet to look at yours, so maybe some day when all my UFOs are done, then I will be able to start mine!
I also have always wanted to make one of these gorgeous quilts, but thought it was too difficult. Thanks for the great tutorial. Looks like good in-front-of-the-TV hand work for me. I'll probably wait until after the holidays, but it's definitely on my To Do list now!
Thanks for the tutorial! I WILL make a catherdral window quilt one day, I WILL!
Thanks for this great tutorial.
Thanks so much for this tutorial. I have a cathedral window crib quilt that was given to my daughter over 30 years ago and it is now in desperate need of repair. I hope to replace the frayed blocks using your tutorial and maybe it will last her another 30 years.
Thank you soooo much! How thoughtful and generous of you to share this. I've been wracking my brain to remember how to do this Cathedral quilt. I made a pillow years ago and thoroughly enjoyed the "by hand" aspect of this technique. I don't like using my sewing machine. Can't wait to get started on my coverlet.
I got the squares done...but stumped as to how to put them together ..any suggestions? ( Cindy from the gathering room)
I would love to make a Cathedral Window quilt for my queen size bed. I put some figures together for a six foot wide by seven foot long quilt and the yardage for the background material came to 42 yards. I went over it several times and always came out with the same answer. So--I have 2 questions. 1) Is there any way to do this without using so much fabric? 2) Won't it be too heavy to move around? Most queen size quilts take about half that much. Anyone out there have any answers or comments?
